Preparing to Vote A Guide for Students Ahead of Election Day

By: Morgan Arguellez

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, knowing how and when to vote can be just as important as deciding which issues matter to you. Election Day for the 2026 midterm elections is November 3, 2026. For students preparing to participate in the midterm elections, taking a few steps ahead of time can make the voting process easier and help avoid last-minute problems.

One of the first steps is checking your voter registration. Before Election Day, voters should confirm that they are registered and that their information is up to date. Students can use Vote.org as a resource for voter registration and other election information. Checking your registration early gives you time to address any questions or problems before Election Day. According to Vote.org, the Texas voter registration deadline is 30 days before Election Day. For the 2026 midterm elections, that deadline is October 5, 2026. For in-person registration, the application must be received by that deadline, while mailed applications must be postmarked by the deadline.

It is also important to keep track of early voting and voting-by-mail deadlines. For the 2026 Texas general election, early voting will take place from October 19 through October 30, 2026. Students who may be away from their usual voting location, such as those planning to travel home, should research their available voting options ahead of time.

Voting by mail may be an option for eligible Texas voters who meet the applicable requirements. The deadline to apply for a ballot by mail for the 2026 election is October 23, 2026, and the application must be received by that date. Completed ballots generally must be postmarked by 7 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, 2026, and received by 5 p.m. on November 4, 2026, with different rules applying to certain voters, including some voters who are voting from outside the United States. Because mail ballots require time to request, complete and return, voters should make arrangements as early as possible.

If you are not voting in Texas, be sure to check Vote.org for the 2026 midterm election deadlines and voting requirements in your state. Deadlines for voter registration, early voting, requesting a mail-in ballot and returning a ballot can vary depending on where you are registered to vote.

Another important part of preparing for the 2026 midterms is knowing what will actually be on your ballot. Ballots can include multiple offices, candidates and local measures depending on where a voter lives. Rather than waiting until Election Day to see the choices, voters can look up their ballot ahead of time when that information is available. This gives them time to learn about the candidates, offices and policies they will encounter.

Making a voting plan can bring all of these steps together. Students can decide whether to vote early or on Election Day, determine where they will vote, arrange transportation and set aside enough time to cast a ballot. Students who plan to travel home should consider their schedules well in advance and determine which voting option works best for their circumstances.

Finally, voters should make sure they know what identification is required at the polls. Identification requirements can vary by state, so voters should review the current requirements for their state and bring an acceptable form of identification when voting in person.

Being prepared to vote in the 2026 midterm elections does not have to be complicated. Checking registration, keeping track of important deadlines, researching voting options, reviewing the ballot, making a voting plan and knowing the identification requirements can help students feel more prepared before Election Day. Taking the time to plan ahead allows voters to arrive informed and ready to participate in the midterm elections.
